Don't be a Square, Modify! - November 2024

Don't be a Square, Modify! - November Newsletter 2024

Hello Questers!

The sirens blare as the airlock connects to JinCorp space station. As the airlock opens with an audible hiss and rush of recycled station air, two customs agents carrying datapads and a bad attitude await you. “Anything to declare?” they ask. What do you do?

You might have noticed that we’ve been busy this month! We’ve had big announcements every week in the updates, from content to mobile to features to clear chat. Plus, we reorganized the office, smashed Bug Hunt Week and restructured our internal working processes with new and returning faces joining the team.

iPad Support

No longer does the iPad user need to download the iPhone app. Instead, they can now use an app designed for the big screen (well, iPad sized screen). That’s right, iPads now have a specific app just for them!

And be jealous not my android using friends, as our team have been crushing android updates as well, making it more responsive and easier to use overall.

We have so many updates coming around the app and tablet - especially around note access and writing, and of course keeping it up to date with the web platform!

Modifiers and Collections

If you type /m in notes or the universal character sheet, you’ll be able to open modifiers. A brand new widget that allows you to store a value that can be referenced in multiple roll buttons, and even other modifiers!

For example, proficiency scores, ability modifiers - scores that get used with multiple skills and rolls - all the buttons will now auto update when the modifier is updated.

Thank you for all the great feedback you’ve given us, but we still, want, more! Feel free to email us support@questportal.com, send us a message on Chat with Us on the web, or join our Discord channel!

Road Map - Drawing Tools

As part of our new working processes, we’ve started 2 big sprints across November - one for importing, and one for better session tools.

Even though we had a huge win with session tools with the Polygon Fog of War feature this month, we’re not resting on our laurels. We’re jumping into making the session tools easy to use, improved in quality and… in some cases… create.

Including the highly requested drawing tools - check out this sneak peak.

And on the importing side, it’s something we’ve wanted to do for a long time, and something you have been asking for. For character sheets and campaign notes… the task is not an easy one, and we might not have something to show or test over the next month, but we will keep you updated!

Templates

DH Cross made such a good sheet for his system Plyphyny, that we promoted it to our featured templates! Check it out here.

And speaking of templates, we also added Action Dice RPG in both Portuguese AND English.

If you have a template that you’re using for a system we haven’t created one for OR if you updated an existing template with modifiers and collections before we got the chance, then please email Support@questportal.com to be considered for being added to the Featured Templates tab.

24/7 Support

If you didn’t know, 9/10 staff are based in Iceland! That means that our support team isn't always awake when folks need help. To help with this, we added a new form of support that allows us to provide some form of assistance 24/7.

In the Chat with Us help button in the bottom right of the web platform, you can now access the AI Agent, who will potentially be able to answer your questions based on all the Quest Portal Documentation we have available.

Don’t worry, you can still always ask to speak with us, but it might take a little while for us to get back to you outside of office hours!

Join Us at Dragonmeet!

Come meet Gunnar and Hem in the wild as they’re headed to Dragonmeet.

Find them Saturday November 30th, from 09.00 until quite late at the Novotel Hammersmith, London, UK and ask them for some Quest Portal goodies and a high five. See you soon London!

Blog

Creating a character is tough, but luckily there's lots of paths to lead you to characters you want to play, and some of that comes from the rules and settings of a game, and in other cases, it comes from general character building advice.

Thorsteinn Mar nails this blend in his article How to Create Characters in D&D. This is a little excerpt from his wisdom:

From concept...

It is important to start with a concept or general idea of where to start. The Player’s Handbook offers many different classes and races (which you can also find in the Quest Portal library), but the concept is more than just a combination of these two. It is the foundation of your character and helps you choose both race and class...
