Templates are ready-made, easy-to-use, no-code character sheets. You can choose from a wide selection of featured templates or create your own. Templates are easily shared, and any template you can access can be duplicated and adapted.

You will find all templates in the Templates tab of the Character page in Quest Portal.

The Templates tab shows all available templates. The Template cards show the name and author of the template, the game system, and the template tagline. 

Did you know that the avatar you choose for your template will become the artwork of the template card?

In the bottom right, the ellipsis (...) button gives you a drop-down menu for Duplicate, Create Character, or Share Template. (See below for descriptions.)

Clicking the Template takes you to a preview of the Character Sheet Template.

You can also search or sort the Templates you can access and create a new template from the Templates tab.

Templates are filtered by view. “All”, “Your templates”, “Featured” and “Shared with you” only appear when you have a Character Sheet Template that you have created, or when someone has shared a link with you. If someone has shared a Template with you, create a duplicate of that template in case the original own changes or deletes their versions.

On the Template Preview Page you will see the main template avatar at the center and the actual character sheet on the right. 

You can only edit templates that you have created or duplicated.

Below the Main Avatar, you are presented with a couple of options:

Duplicate will open your own copy of the template, which you can customize further. This Template is also added to Your Templates for future use and editing.

- A new character using the Template as a basis will be made, without making a new template. This character is added your Character vault.

 - The link will be copied to your clipboard, and when shared, will allow other Quest Portal users to access the Template. When the link it clicked or put into the address bar of a browser, it will open the Template.

: If someone clicking the link isn’t logged in or doesn’t have an account, they can still look through the character sheet, but they will not be able to use, edit or duplicate unless they log in.

These options are also available through the ellipsis (...) in the top right hand corner as well.

Creating and editing Character sheet templates

A duplicated template will create a new Template and automatically name it the same with the addition of “copy”. It will contain all the same information and sheet as the original template.

The "Create New Template" button will give you a completely blank Universal Character Sheet to build.

Both Create New and Duplicate will give access to the same interface, features, and editing options. 

Everything is saved/synced as you make changes, so if you click away, your progress is not lost. They will also be automatically added to Your Templates.

You are able to do the following in a Template that you are the author of:

Set avatar (doubles as cover image for the Template). You can upload an image, choose on from our prepared Avatars or if you are a Quest Portal Pro Subscriber, generate an image.

Change the name of the template in the place where you would normally name a character. Our Featured Templates use the name of the system, but this is entirely up to the creator.

Create a Tagline. This is intended for further information such as character sheet, NPC stat block, but it is entirely up to you.

Change the system the sheet is intended for. If for a system not in our list, use Custom System. Feel free to reach out to us (

Add Tabs, Widgets, Headers, Tables, Roll Buttons, Checklists… the same as the Universal Character Sheet, to customize the Template as required.

From this Edit Mode, you are able to Share the Template with other users, as well as being able to Create a Character right away.

Create a Template from an existing Character

Character Sheets when viewed from the Character vault have a “Create A Template” option below the main avatar. It is also available from the ellipsis menu in the top right (...)

This creates a template from the Character Sheet, and will take you to the Edit Mode for your new Character Sheet.

In Campaign, navigate to the Campaign Settings. There is an option to set a Character Sheet Template. Clicking this gives you a menu where you can find Templates you are an author of (or are included in Quest Portal’s Featured templates) that correspond with the game system you choose.

Once a Character Sheet Template has been selected, any new character sheets made from within this campaign will use the template chosen to create editable character sheets - for both players and the GM.

Character Sheet Templates create a template for multiple character sheets to be created from, enabling the community to create for systems they're playing.

Pro users have access to our AI Assistant. You can interact with the assistant through Assistant Chat or AI Notes.

Use the Assistant to help you find answers to rules, summarize lore, help you create characters, or build your world.

When you create a campaign you can set the campaign to a specific game system. This also sets your campaign to use the Assistant for that game system. If you don't see your game system, then it is not currently supported.

You can interact with the AI Assistant Chat through the Campaign Assistant Tool or the Global Assistant Tool. 

You will find the Campaign Assistant Tool in the right sidebar when viewing your campaign or playing a session.

You will find the Global Assistant Tool by clicking the star icon in the top-level navigation in the left sidebar. The Global Assistant Tool shows you all the Assistant chats you have ongoing across all your campaigns.

Get assistance with rules or help with creating characters, locations, descriptions and more. The AI Assistant is there to help game masters and players.

AI Assistant

In the Library you will find all the books you have access to. These can be free sources, such as the D&D 5e SRD, or sources that come with a paid subscription like Chaosium Core.

The Library is available on desktop and mobile and features a powerful search function that helps you find answers quickly.

Your Library is organized by game systems. You can then click on a game system in order to see the available sources for that system.

Any game system you see will have at least one free book or source for you to read. 

When viewing a game system you will see all the sources listed in a similar grid.

Books that are behind a paywall are grayed out and have the crown icon on them. Other sources that are free to use or you have unlocked appear normal.

When you have selected the book you want to read you can navigate through the book using the sidebar on the left. In the sidebar, the contents of the book are organized into folders and pages.

Selecting a page will open that page in the viewer and selecting a folder will expand that folder.

In many of the books in the Library there are references to other pages in the books or specific entries. These can be used to quickly navigate to those pages and back.

Links have the page icon with the arrow and are underlined. Clicking on a link will open that page.

Once you have opened a page you can always click the back arrow next to the name of the page you are viewing in the page header to go back to your previous page.

The Library search is very powerful and can surface content across game systems and sources. It users semantic search, meaning it will be able to find results with similar meaning in case you don't use the exact word or phrase that appears in the result.

When you search the matching results are shown as cards. In each card you will see the search phrase highlighted if there's an exact match.

The cards also show you where the result can be found in the hierarchy of the library. In the above example it would be the Pathfinder 2e game system, Beastiary 3 book, in the Chapter Monsters, under the Section H within the Hag entry.

Where you initiate the search matters. If you are viewing a specific page and you search you are searching through the specific source you have open. If you are viewing a game system and search you will search within the sources of that game system. Likewise, if you are at the top level of the Library and search then you are searching across all your game systems and sources.

You can change the level you are searching on by using the filter pills at the top of the search results. The blue pill shows the current level and clicking on the others will move to that level. This is helpful if you initiate the search at the source level, but actually want to search all sources within the game system.

There are a few other fun things you can do in your Library. First of all, you can favorite pages for quick access later.

Favoriting creates a new section in the Library sidebar called 

. You can favorite pages from the page header by clicking the star.

From the header you can also click the ... menu to see an option to copy a link to the page as well as to report an issue. The reporting functionality is to get a message to us about the contents of the page you are viewing. Please use that if you spot any errors!

The Library in Quest Portal features all free and paid sources that you have access to. Read on desktop and mobile. Enjoy highly powerful search.

It's a rainy night as your bus is stuck in bumper to bumber traffic. The break-lights filter through the window like a red snake for a mile.

Your mind is stuck on tonight's session and the loss of your character. It was inevitable. With the loss, there's also hope. You can now play that Bardbarian concept you've been dreaming about.

What do you do?

We just launched the biggest update for our mobile app since it was spawned. You can now view and create characters, make changes, and roll dice directly from your sheet.

This unlocks the ability to keep your sheet on your mobile while playing in person. It also means you can admire your character or brain-dump new character concepts on the fly.

We have already started thinking about making improvements. The biggest will allow you to view and use your characters while connected to a session.

Let's walk through what this allows you to do in more detail.

We now support viewing your universal character sheets and your enhanced character sheets (Call of Cthulhu) on your mobile.

First, you will notice a new bottom bar navigation in the app. There you will find a navigation item for Characters. Clicking it will show you a list of all your characters.

If you are at all like me you will have created a lot of characters. They can be character concepts you want to play in the future or you tend to create a lot of NPCs for your games.

The character list has a sort & filter functionality. Characters can be sorted by their name or when they were created. It supports filtering for claimable characters, characters in a campaign and characters not in a campaign. Finally, you can search for characters using the search bar.

Viewing universal character sheets on mobile

Our universal character sheets allow you to create a "paper" character sheet for any game system. They can be further enhanced with roll buttons, turning those "paper" sheets into "digital" sheets. Our roll buttons support many systems but not all, so that is where the biggest difference lies.

When you open a universal character sheet on mobile you can view its contents, navigate between tabs (or pages) in the sheet, click on roll buttons to roll dice and make edits.

Editing your sheet works just like in the web app. The sheets are an editor that allows you to create elements like headings, and paragraphs, insert images, create tables and checklists, add roll buttons and more. Furthermore, you can change the name of the character and the tagline. 

Viewing enhanced character sheets on mobile

Our Call of Cthulhu character sheet was the first enhanced character sheet we released. It differs from our universal sheets in that it has unique UI elements (styled buttons) and comes preloaded with options to choose from.

The functionality on enhanced sheets is the same. You can view content, navigate between tabs, roll dice and edit. There are a few differences in the interactions that are noteworthy.

First, you can long press to bring up a menu to roll with penalty/bonus die or to roll against a specific challenge (regular, hard, extreme) and edit that button's values.

Second, the "manage" buttons show a modal to edit multiple values in the same section. This is quite handy to make changes to your skills in bulk.

Third, using the manage dialog you can also bring preloaded content onto your sheet. Weapons are a good example of that.

Finally, if you want to take notes there is always the Notes tab. You will find the editing experience similar to the universal character sheets.

With the most recent update to our iOS and Android mobile apps, you can now create characters on the fly.

You can hit the plus icon from the character list to create a new character. From the menu select if you want a universal sheet or enhanced Call of Cthulhu 7e character sheet. 

When you create a new universal character sheet it will be blank. You can start writing out your backstory or create other character sheet elements. 

We have plans to release templates for Universal Characters very soon, making it easier to create characters with prefilled information for the system you are interested in.

Mobile Character Sheets

Dice can be rolled from character sheets, notes, library, chat, dice tool and formula builder.

At the heart of every roll is a roll formula. Roll formulas are made up of dice notations and modifiers. To roll a 20-sided die you can simply use the roll formula "1d20". By writing "1d8+5" you will roll an 8-sided die and add 5 to the result. Below is an overview of all the possible dice notations and modifiers.

Roll buttons can be found in universal character sheets, notes and library sources. A roll button looks like 

1d20+5

Weapon attack

  Both buttons will roll a 1d20+5 but the latter has a specified name.

Enhanced character sheets like our Call of Cthulhu 7th edition sheet have buttons that are styled differently. Normally, in enhanced sheets, you don't have as much control over the roll formula that will be rolled.

You can use the chat to roll dice by typing in the "/roll" followed by a roll formula: "/roll 1d20-3". This would roll a 20-sided die and subtract 3.

As always when you roll from chat using a roll formula that supports 3D dice, then you'll see the dice roll all over the screen. The result of the throw is shown in the chat.

There are two visual roll formula builders. The first is the Dice Menu that allows you to pick which dice to roll and how many. So if you click on the 10-sided die icon 4 times then you are essentially making the roll formula equate to "4d10". The dice tool is found on your campaign home and on the scene during sessions.

The second tool is the formula builder and is available as a tool in the right sidebar in campaigns and sessions. This tool helps you build more complex roll formulas and save them for reuse later.

Rolling dice in tabletop role-playing games

TTRPGs have different core types of dice. Standard dice are the most common where you have d4, d6, d8, d10, d12, d20 and d100 (a d10 + a percentile die). Narrative dice are used in systems like Genesys and Star Wars. FATE uses 6-sided dice with different faces. There are even card-based TTRPGs.

Currently, Quest Portal supports standard dice and Fate dice. We are working on bringing in more dice support. The following section discusses the different elements supported in Quest Portal.

First, it's important to note that you can write roll formulas for dice unsupported by the 3D dice. So you can create a roll formula like “1d1” 

2d1000

 and it will roll that for you and return the result, you just won’t see any 3D dice.

Roll formulas support most math operators as modifiers, like plus (+), minus (-), multiplication (*), division (/) and exponent (**). Therefore, rolling 

1d20/5

 will roll the die, take the result and divide it by 5.

Modifiers can also string multiple dice together: 

1d20 + 1d10 + 1d3

 will roll a 20-sided die, a 10-sided die and a 3-sided die (you will only see the first two roll across your screen).

To compare a dice roll to some value you can use comparison notations like 

 (=). Comparison rolls will always return a 0 if false and 1 if true.

1d100<75

 will roll the 100-sided die (a 1d10 and a percentile die) and compare the result with the value 75. If it is lower than or equal to 75 then it will return a 1 else a 0.

Dropping or keeping dice work very similarly. They will allow you to specify if you want to keep/drop the highest or lowest dice and how many to keep/drop.

9d6kh3

 will roll 9 times 6-sided dice and keep the three highest rolls and add them up. So if the dice roll like 1, 4, 3, 1, 1, 3, 5, 2, 2 then you would keep the 5, 4, and 3 for a total of 12.

Exploding, compounding and penetrating dice

Our 3D dice don't currently support exploding, compounding and penetrating dice. The dice that should explode are not re-rolled visually, however they are accounted for in the dice results.

The roll formulas support using exploding, compounding and penetrating notations. These are 

(!) are when you roll the maximum number of a die you get to re-roll again and add the additional roll to your total for the roll. If the additional roll is also a maximum number, you get to keep rolling!

6d10!

 and you will initially roll 6 times 10-sided dice. If that results
3, 7, 6, 8, 8, 10 then you get to roll that 10 again for a total of 7 dice rolls. Then add up all the numbers.

 (!!) are when the additional rolls for each dice are added together as a single "roll". With the compounding exploding rolls a single roll can be infinitely high! The Compare Point can be specified to change the exploding trigger.

5d6!!

- Rolls 5d6 and compound every time a 6 is rolled

5d6!!5

 - Rolls 5d6 and compound every time a 5 is rolled, 6's will be treated as a normal roll

 (!p) are when additional rolls for each dice have 1 subtracted from the roll. A die can penetrate multiple times but the modifier is only ever -1 to each additional die.

 - Rolls 5d6 and explode with a -1 modifier every time a 6 is rolled

5d6!p>5

 - Rolls 5d6 and explode with a -1 modifier every time a 5 or higher is rolled.

The Dice Formula Builder allows you to create complex roll strings visually. This can help you navigate creating the more complex rolls, without remembering all the syntax required. 

Rolls that are saved in the Dice tool are tied to a campaign.

The dF notation accurately simulates FATE dice as 6-sided dice in which two sides are 0, two sides are +1, and two sides are -1.

 as your roll formula. You can add modifiers to those dice as well.

If you want to perform a series of rolls and compare each to a common check you can use the roll grouping notations.

{4d6+3d8}kh1

 will roll 4 times 6-side dice and 3 times 8-sided dice and from both pools keep the highest value.

{4d6,3d8}kh1 will roll the same number of dice, but keep the highest group total. If you get 10 from your 4d6 and 9 from your 3d8, then the 10 is kept.

You can roll dice secretly using the Dice Menu by clicking the eye icon (

Additionally, when you roll from a hidden GM character, that roll will be marked as hidden.

Rolling and adding additional information

You can write a valid roll formula then add non-formula text with your roll. So if you use the formula 

1d20+5 Short Sword Attack

 then will only roll the 1d20 and add 5 to it, the rest will be included in the roll announcement information.

You can do math-only rolls by adding a math expression after the roll command. This won't roll any dice, just perform the calculation.

You can use the floor and ceil operators to round rolls that might otherwise lead to fractions. The roll formula 

1d20+floor(1d10/3)

 will roll a 20-sided die and a 10-sided die and for the 10-sided die divide the result by 3 then round down to the nearest integer.

* Multiplication. Will multiply with a provided value

/ Division. Will divide with a provided value 

1d10/5

% Modulus division. The result of a % b is the remainder of a / b

Roll formulas follow a standard order of operation in math. Parenthesis can be used to group operations together.

Quest Portal Pro offers multiple ways to interact with AI Assistants who are experts in the TTRPG systems you are playing.

The AI Assistant in Notes is available to Game Masters or Players who are worldbuilding or improving the notes they take during sessions.

To start creating with your AI Assistant in Notes you can either type in "/", a forward slash, to get suggestions on different generation themes or select the 

Once you have selected your generation theme, you will see a dialog to write in your prompt.

Here you can describe or instruct the AI on what you are trying to achieve. For each generation theme, Quest Portal has created more accurate prompts and your specific instructions will be included.

The prompts consider the system you are playing (you can change this in your campaign settings), the information you have provided in your campaign description, and the note you are already within.

When you start generating the Assistant will stream the response as soon as it is ready.

Once the generation is complete you will see options to keep what was created by the Assistant, to try again, or to discard.

the generated results will insert it into your note.

 will start generating again using the same prompt instructions.

will remove the results and the prompt dialog and give you a new empty paragraph instead.

You can change the instructions before trying again to make tweaks. Additionally, you can change the generation theme.

The following is an overview of the currently available generation themes.

Generating a character concept will create a name, description, noticeable aspects, wants and needs, and secrets or obstacles for a character or NPC.

Generate a random encounter with a description and a list of possible loot.

Write any custom instructions you want. Minimal prompt assistance is provided behind the scenes. 

Generate a list of items that have a name and a description.

Create a location with a basic description, atmosphere and a list of aspects you can use to help summarize the location.

Generate a quest for your players. Provides a title of the quest and a description.

Generate a random rollable table for whatever you want.

Generate a list of secrets with a name and description.
